GOAL SETTING

GOAL SETTING
A useful exercise for setting goals and realizing dreams

Until recently, one of my biggest fears was setting goals. This was a very harmful fear to say the least. It stopped me from believing in myself and following my heart. It dampened my ability to act on what I wanted in my life. This fear caused anxiety, stress, and depression. I am happy to say that this fear no longer exists for me!

Meditation has transformed my life. It is a tool I use to find clarity, to calm down, and to increase my self confidence. And it has been a major reason for why I can set goals and realize them!

I was taught to meditate at Madre Grande Monastery in Dulzura, California (see photo). This magical place is in the high desert on the border between San Diego, California and Tecate, Mexico. On my most recent visit there, the abbot of the monastery, John, taught me a writing exercise on goal setting. I have benefited so much from this writing exercise that I wish to share it with you!

To begin, write out your Multi Life Goal. This is a goal that you cannot realize in this life time, nor the next life or the next, but it is your ultimate goal. (You do not have to believe in reincarnation to do this exercise). For me it is to be a Saint like Mother Teresa, the Dalai Lama, or Ghandi or an enlightened being like Buddha.

Then write your Next Life Goal. For me, it is to be a world-renowned speaker, teacher and healer.

Next is This Life Goal. For me, it is to be a successful entrepreneur. I want to travel the United States and parts of the world leading workshops and teaching yoga.

Now it becomes more focused. Write out where you want to be in 7 years. Then 5 years, 3 Years and 1 year. Write out the steps you need to take or the How to achieve these goals.

Write out your 6 month plan, your 3 month plan, and 1 month plan. You can take the exercise further by writing out your plan for each week.

After you've finished writing for the time frames, take some time to delve deeper into your goals. This is the point where you honestly reflect. Ask yourself: What am I doing that supports my dreams? What can I do more of? What am I doing that is not supporting my dreams? What can I do instead? What are my gifts? What do I do well? What brings me joy?

Thank you for taking the time to read this blog. I hope you try the exercise!
